Sports Acupuncture

Acupuncture continues to gain recognition in sports medicine.  Athletes typically seek out acupuncture for injury prevention and management, recovery including delayed onset muscle soreness, as well as performance enhancement.  Acupuncture is also the perfect complement to sports physical therapy and/or sports chiropractic care.

Research has shown acupuncture to be effective at decreasing pain and inflammation.  It can be very beneficial in decreasing soft tissue restriction, allowing mobility to improve.  By reducing spasm and muscular guarding, strength and coordination of both the primary and opposing muscle groups are enhanced.  Research also demonstrates that acupuncture increases circulation to target tissues.  This positively impacts healing, by both improving tissue nutrition and oxygenation as well as assisting in the removal of metabolic wastes.

Regular acupuncture treatment while in training can be extremely helpful in addressing small imbalances, preventing bigger issues from developing.  This type of proactive care prevents injuries and speeds healing times when injuries do occur.  The best strategy for sports performance enhancement is proper training.  By preventing injuries during training, acupuncture can help ensure that you are at peak levels of performance during competition.

I have worked with many athletes, including marathon and ultra-marathon runners, long distance and professional cyclists, triathletes, tennis players, golfers, and swimmers.  It's wonderful to work with people who are so disciplined and have devoted themselves to their sport.  I also love working with the everyday athlete - any person who is willing to make the investment and commitment to become or stay physically active.
